STAND WITH PALESTINE BY STANDING WITH COLOMBIA

See letter text below

Global campaign in solidarity with Colombia to condemn US-led Zionist imperialist attacks and to support Gustavo Petro’s proposal to deploy a multinational protection force in Palestine.

During the current phase of Zionist genocide, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has done more than any other world leader to support the Palestinian people against Israeli genocide and to defend a future for Palestine of self-determination, sovereignty, reparations, and the right of return, as well as to demand accountability for those responsible for and complicit in the genocide.

Petro has taken bold actions within his own country—angering Colombia’s powerful Zionist right-wing opposition—to block the shipment of coal to Israel and cut other economic as well as diplomatic ties with the genocidal entity, in line with Colombia’s obligations as a State Party to the Genocide Convention.

Internationally, Petro has led efforts at multilateral coordination to bring an end to the genocide, including by co-chairing The Hague Group. And most importantly, in response to the firm demand of Palestinian Civil Society as represented by its largest collective representation, PNGO (the Palestinian NGO Network), President Petro has committed to introducing a Uniting for Peace resolution to the UN General Assembly (UNGA). This resolution would circumvent the US veto in the UN Security Council to mandate the deployment of a multinational protection force to Palestine aimed at promoting the effective self-determination of the Palestinian people in their territory.

This resolution would allow the US veto in the UN Security Council to be circumvented, enabling the General Assembly to order the deployment of a multinational protection force in Palestine aimed at promoting the effective self-determination of the Palestinian people in their territory.

The main purposes of this multinational force, which could only be composed of countries not complicit in the genocide, would be to a) protect Palestinians from Israeli violence, b) open humanitarian corridors, c) preserve evidence of war crimes for future tribunals, and d. support recovery and reconstruction. The resolution would also mandate implementation of enforceable sanctions and a comprehensive arms embargo against Israel; withdraw the occupying state’s credentials to the UN; and reaffirm the right of the Palestinian people to use all necessary means to resist colonial domination and foreign occupation in accordance with international law.

Since President Petro first announced his intention to introduce this Uniting for Peace resolution on September 2, 2025, the Trump administration has:

  • De-certified Colombia as a drug control partner
  • Revoked Petro’s US visa, preventing him from going to UN Headquarters
  • Increased tariffs on Colombia
  • Cut off all aid to Colombia
  • Imposed sanctions on President Petro
  • Carried out dozens of blatantly illegal extrajudicial assassinations in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean under the false pretext of “combating drug trafficking,” killing citizens of various countries, including Colombia
  • Threatened war against Colombia, alongside its regime-change effort in Venezuela

Although US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio claim that their attacks on Venezuela and Colombia are part of a “war on drugs,” the peoples of the world can see through this fiction, as there is no evidence that the presidents of these two countries are involved in drug trafficking.

In the case of Venezuela, whose government also has a strong tradition of solidarity with Palestine, the US government’s own data shows that fentanyl does not pass through that country, and that only a small fraction of the cocaine and other drugs leaving South America for the US transit through its territory. In the case of Colombia, President Petro is the among the only Colombian presidents to openly fight drug traffickers, rather than collaborate with them. Petro has further angered the Trump administration by refusing to allow the Colombian military to be complicit in its imperialist aggression against Venezuela and by going even further to increase security cooperation between Colombia and Venezuela.

It is clear to the world that Colombia is being punished—and now threatened with war—in large part due to President Petro’s steadfast solidarity with the people of Palestine. This imperialist retaliation is also clearly meant to intimidate President Petro and the people of Colombia, and to weaken their commitment to Palestinian liberation. It demonstrates what President Petro himself has stated on numerous occasions: that none of us will be free until Palestine is free.

This is why a broad coalition of Colombian social movements sent a letter to Petro on October 30, asking him to introduce the Uniting for Peace resolution regardless of current and future retaliation by the United States. They wrote (in part):

«As Colombians, we recognize the risks we face together because of your refusal to bow down to the empire. Your defense of national sovereignty and your solidarity with Palestine have made Colombia the target of military threats from the Zionist and US imperial apparatus. But we assure you that by introducing your resolution immediately in the General Assembly—before the Security Council acts—we and the organized peoples of the entire world will support you with all our strength. Instead of weakening in the face of threats from Washington, Colombia will be stronger than ever, strengthened by its global moral leadership and the unwavering solidarity of nations and peoples who yearn for justice.

Mr. President, Colombia, like Palestine, is not alone. Millions of people on every continent demand respect for Colombia and justice for Palestine. Social movements, human rights organizations, trade unions, faith communities, and committed citizens are ready to mobilize in support of the Colombian initiative. This organized international solidarity will protect Colombia from imperial reprisals.

The peoples of Palestine and Colombia, brothers in the struggle against occupation, expect Colombia to act in accordance with its principles. History will judge this moment, and we trust that Colombia will continue to stand on the side of humanity and life, demonstrating that dignity, justice, and compassion among peoples are more powerful than the threats of empire.

We urge you to act with the urgency that this moment requires, calling on the nations of the world through the General Assembly to truly protect the Palestinian people and defend the principles of international law.»

In this context of solidarity under threat, Friends of The Hague Group (FoTHG), taking leadership from organized Palestinian civil society as represented by PNGO, calls upon social movements, organized labor, political parties, and other organizations around the world to stand with Palestine by standing with Colombia.

Unless otherwise indicated (see #2 below), organizational signatures will be added to BOTH of the following letters:

  1. Letter to President Petro, to be delivered to the Colombian embassy or consulate in the respective countries of signing organizations on Monday, November 17. Actions will be posted HERE. For countries where there is no direct Colombian representation, the letter will be delivered to the regional Colombian Embassy responsible for that country.
  2. Letter to presidents, foreign ministers and UN ambassadors of signatory organizations, also to be sent November 17, requesting that they support Colombia’s Uniting for Peace proposal at the UNGA (countries that are very close allies of the Zionist state will be excepted).

LETTER TO PRESIDENT PETRO

To be delivered in Spanish

November 17, 2025

His Excellency Dr. Gustavo F. Petro Urrego, President, Republic of Colombia

Honorable Dr. Victor de Currea-Lugo, Presidential Advisor for the Middle East, Republic of Colombia

As civil society movements and organizations from [COUNTRY], we want you to know that the peoples of the world stand with you in your firm condemnation of the imperialist Zionist aggression of the United States, which not only tragically affects the Palestinian people, but also threatens the peace and stability of your country, your region, and the world, as well as your personal safety.

We would like to personally thank you for your global leadership in courageously challenging the atrocities being committed by the Zionist state and demanding respect for the fundamental rights to sovereignty and justice of the Palestinian people and nation. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the brave Colombian people who elected you as their head of state and who support your just demands.

President Petro, we hereby add our voices to the Colombian social movements that have offered you their firm support, affirming:

As Colombians, we recognize the risks we face together because of your refusal to bow down to the empire. Your defense of national sovereignty and your solidarity with Palestine have made Colombia the target of war threats from the Zionist and US imperial apparatus. But we assure you that by immediately introducing your resolution [from Unión Pro Paz to send a multilateral protection force to Palestine] in the General Assembly, we and the organized peoples of the entire world will support you with all our strength. Instead of weakening in the face of Washington’s threats, Colombia will be stronger than ever, strengthened by your global moral leadership and the unwavering solidarity of nations and peoples who yearn for justice.

As you yourself have stated on numerous occasions, none of us will be free until Palestine is free. Therefore, we also want to ask you to urgently present the announced “Uniting for Peace” Resolution at a Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly, as we fully agree with you that this is the only viable way to stop the ongoing genocide and achieve a free Palestine.

We also want you to know that this necessary and urgent measure has the support of peoples around the world, and that if, after presenting the resolution to the General Assembly, the US and Israel seek to take further reprisals against you and your people for these courageous actions in defense of Palestine and humanity, we are committed to coming to your defense. Furthermore, we pledge to work tirelessly to demand that our own governments, as member states of the United Nations General Assembly, provide you with the necessary support to ensure that the resolution is effectively adopted.

Sincerely,

[NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONAL SIGNATORIES]

LETTER TO STATE LEADERS

To be sent in official national language

November 17, 2025

[ADDRESSED TO PRESIDENT, CC: FOREIGN MINISTER AND UN AMBASSADOR FOR EACH COUNTRY]

Your Excellencies:

As civil society movements and organizations from [COUNTRY] , we write to request that you stand with Palestinian and global civil society by committing to vote for the UNGA Uniting for Peace resolution that Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro has promised to introduce in an Emergency Special Session, calling for a multinational armed protection force to be sent to Palestine.

We urge you also to firmly reject the U.S. proposal for a “stabilization” force, which organized Palestinian society has firmly rejected, or any other plan put forth by countries that have been complicit in the genocide.

On September 18, 2024, the UNGA passed Resolution A/ES-10/L.31, demanding Israel end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory within 12 months and to immediately comply with the provisional measures in the genocide case at the International Court of Justice. Since then, Israel has entrenched its occupation and escalated its genocidal attacks on Gaza, even today, in the context of the so-called «ceasefire» brokered by U.S. president Trump. Now, it is time to take binding action to enforce the will of the people of Palestine and the world, in order to end this genocide.

If you make the call to authorize an armed protection force for Palestine through Uniting for Peace, the world will stand with you and all the governments of the world who have chosen to listen to their people. Our efforts will not stop until the genocide ends, humanitarian aid enters unfettered, and the occupation ends.

Sincerely,
